Challenge #5

GOOGLE MAPS: Get directions to or from a specific location

Use Google Maps to access the world in map view or satellite view. You can also see photographs of different locations, do a weather check, view web cams, bike trails and bike lanes, plus get directions to and from anywhere locally, nationally or internationally. You can also explore any area through Wikipedia articles.

  1. From inside the Google web browser, click Maps on the menu bar at the top of the screen.
  2. Click the Get directions button on the left side of the page.
  3. In the “A” field, type in the starting address or location.
  4. In the “B” field, type in the ending address or location.
  5. Click Get Directions. Depending on the amount of detail entered, you will see a map with highlighted route from your location (A) to your destination (B).

Challenge #4

EXCEL: Set up a budget spreadsheet

Use Excel to create calculating spreadsheets by using formulas applied to data contained inside cells. Also, make use of the many free templates that are available from Microsoft Office Online.

  1. Open Microsoft Excel.
  2. From inside a blank Excel worksheet, click the Office Button > click New.
  3. From the Microsoft Office Online section at the left click Budgets > click Home Budgets. You will see a number of template options.
  4. Click to select the worksheet of your choice, and then click the Download button at the bottom right.
  5. Make any changes necessary, then input your personal budget information.
  6. Save the file.

Challenge #3

AMAZON: Search for a Kindle E-reader

Search for thousands of products at this online retail site.

  1. From inside a web browser, go to www.amazon.ca. You do not need an account to search for products, but if you want to order something, you will need to create an account.
  2. In the search field at the top of the page, type Kindle e-reader. All search results will display.
  3. To search for other products, click the Shop by Department option and select from the list, or type in any product name in the search field.

Challenge #2

PINTEREST: Create an account and share your pictures

Create an account using your email address or through an already existing Facebook or Twitter account. Then, organize and share your images.

  1. From inside a web browser, go to www.pinterest.com
  2. Click the red Join Pinterest button at the top of the Pinterest Home Page. Decide if you want to connect directly through your Facebook or Twitter account, or simply sign up using your email address.
  3. Click on the Facebook or Twitter button, or the sign up with your email address link. (For the purposes of this procedure, we will use an email address).
  4. Fill in the details requested, and then click the Create Account button. You are now ready to create your first board and share.
  5. Click to select an option from the right side of the page, and continue to follow the online instructions.

Challenge #1

WORD: Create a personalized calendar

Choose a daily, monthly or yearly calendar based on an already installed template or choose one from Microsoft Office Online. Also, insert a picture of your own choice, and edit the calendar where required.

  1. Open Microsoft Word.
  2. From inside the blank Word document, click the Office Button > click New. You will see a number of template options.
  3. To select an already installed template, click to choose from the options under the Templates section to the left.
  4. Click to select the template of your choice, then click the Create button
  5. To choose templates from Microsoft Office Online, click the Office Button > click New > click Calendars. You will see a number of template options.
  6. Click to select the template of your choice, and then click the Download button at the bottom right.
  7. To search more calendar selections, type your request in the Search Microsoft Office Online for a Template field to the right, then click the arrow button on the right.
  8. To replace the existing picture with one of your own at home, click on the picture and press the keyboard Delete button.
  9. From the menu bar at the top of the page, click Insert > click Picture > locate the picture, and then click to select it. Click the Insert button.
  10. Edit the calendar in any other fields as required.
  11. Save the document.
